Our Mission

Capture and valorise industrial waste streams

MiR3.lu has the ambition to become a leader in the development and financing of circular projects on an industrial scale using waste streams in the Grouss Regioun. By converting unused residual flows into useful and valuable resources, we contribute to increased circularity and self-sufficiency while creating new green jobs: Industrial symbiosis.

Industrial symbiosis (IS) is a system approach that connects different industrial stakeholders to leverage underutilised resources in a more integrated and sustainable way.

We develop projects that capture industrial waste streams and we valorise these. We bring Industry, entrepreneurs, finance, and government together to facilitate Industrial Symbiosis. Our projects deliver needed outputs and jobs, sustainable and profitable.

By connecting industry that wants to put their waste streams to better use, with entrepreneurs that benefit from accessible energy and raw materials in different forms and the government to make it happen. This circular system also nurtures other possibilities, such as more local jobs and a self-sufficient food production.

Business concept

To capture waste streams and regenerate food-producing businesses

Climate change and sustainability-related challenges require real, rapid and decisive action in the form of industrial-scale solutions. MiR3.lu projects are based on re-use of medium to low-grade waste heat, which typically means temperatures below 80 C°. Such waste streams enable and enhance biological processes, allowing many forms of food, feed and fuel production.

These projects are best suited for cool climate conditions, like in the northern hemisphere. Ambient temperatures higher than the process temperature may require cooling to avoid harming process organisms, as in warm climates. For these reasons, our focus is food production in cool climates.

Five straight steps to a circular way

Identify and qualify industrial waste streams, most suitable applications, partners and possible impact.

Define project, connect stakeholders, secure waste stream, land and funding, benchmark impact.

Technical design, secure permits, select suppliers. Onboard project team.

Initiate construction and procurement, conduct tests, refine impact calculations

Hand over to operator, monitor, carry out continuous improvements. Prepare divestment.

Our Projects

In Koerich, close to Luxembourg City, we are realizing a pilot project. By using waste heat coming from a datacenter we are able to heat Luxembourg’s first large-scale high-tech greenhouse, of 3 hectares, in which we can grow vegetables, all year long under controlled and protected conditions. Heated by waste heat. Heat that otherwise would have been discharged into the atmosphere. Suddenly every season is harvesting season ! It is a substantial greenhouse for Luxembourg. We can produce 50% of the Luxembourgish demand for fresh tomatoes.

Concept Advantages

With only using waste heat, we can produce 50% of the Luxembourgish demand for fresh tomatoes.

A greenhouse requires 90% less water compared to open field production where we cover 100% of the vegetable production with rainwater.

More control over quality

We will be able to produce the vegetables pesticides free. Also we shorten the transportation distance from farm to fork providing fresher production.

It is economically viable and profitable for the local community since It’s a local production increases the Luxembourgish autarky drastically.

About Us

Our Story

The 3 of us, were brought together by coincidence. We are sharing a common vision: Do something useful with waste heat. Three years ago, everyone told us our idea is impossible in Luxembourg. Many have tried to start up something similar in the past decades, but they all failed. Greenhouses were never approved in Luxembourg. We realised industry can play a catalysator role. Soon we noticed the enthusiasm in the market and that when a motivated industrial player joins, the things can happen. We have seen that in close collaboration with the Ministries of Agriculture, Economy and Environment, Luxinnovation and other partners, we can enable and realise a project like this in Luxembourg. A project that makes economically sense and is sustainable due to using waste streams and using 100% rainwater. After 3 years we managed to get the authorisation from the government to construct the first high-tech large-scale greenhouse of Luxembourg, in a green-zone. Regulation was adapted. New laws were passed. Now it is possible.
